Ok, so maybe you remember the film, maybe you don’t. Whether you thought it terrible or not, not the point. However, what we did glean from that mid-90’s studio flash with pre-Matrix Keanu known as Johnny Mnemonic was an interesting look into the future of data protection and portability.

In any case, today we have multi-factor authentication or MFA for short. Instead of the pain of the body, we’ve replaced it with yet another app clogging up our desktop blocking out our available data for the cool stuff like those next-gen miners we are dying to develop for mobile, and wearing out our fingers with all that excessive back and forth trying to remember that stinkin’ six-digit code.

And finally, we found some other great DIYers workin’ it out on Reddit! Build your own and share the love! Or apps that turn our phones into the staking nodes of tomorrow. Or wait we are kinda there.

Anyway, our gear today is that brought by Yubico that yanks our need to constantly reference that little app and type in a bunch of crap all the time. Now we can just Yubikey it with Yubico!

This week we RE-Visit our post from April 22, 2021. Why? Just because its cool. We enjoyed writing it so much, we wanted to re-read this one! Plus, we just can’t get enough street art.

What ever happened to the promise of mechanized street art???

2032 is fast approaching and not only have we not yet seen the quick, self-healing construction surfaces that destroy graffiti in a moment, but we have more importantly not yet seen the digital design-led, mechanized graffiti device that appeared in a particularly cheesed-up cyberpunk classic.

Before anyone hits us up for Demolition Man not being Cyberpunk we merely offer the fact that Cyberpunk 2077 felt compelled to honor this particular classic of the genre with a special reference within their game release. You know it, the three seashells are back!

In any case, we wondered… what the cluck man!?!? Forget the seashells where the heck is our mechanized street art tools?

We have, however, seen developments in terms of the government’s ability to remove, or at least potentially identify and prevent vandalism. As early as 2013, Chicago was working with CityScan on a project that offered a “high-tech, fully-automated code enforcement (that) could be a boon for city coffers!” In that instance, they claim they are after illicit billboards, however, we know graffiti isn’t far behind.

Fantastic news is that street art is alive and well and even available for hire, gotta love the Graffiti Kings. However, while we do appreciate the fact that many art distributors are also keeping the dream alive, ensuring that the traditional tools (with a few cool new updates) are available to those in the craft and for those interested, we found Jerry’s Artarama, it’s just not enough.

However, we did find hope! While it doesn’t have that real-world spray appeal, we know the try is alive as some have been working to create graffiti effects with Nintendo’s Wii! This project offers a new chance at wireless drawing using a Wiimote, a Wii Sensor Bar, and a large display!

Our New Best Friend… The Digital Wallet

As always we offer three quick insights into the latest gear!

HOT v. COLD

COLD Wallets are either device or paper. Password is key for the former as devices. Trezor and Ledger Nano X come to mind; find out more here) can help you secure your dough with 2FA(Factor Authentication) using industry-standard encryption, but remembering the password is up to you. So, we write it down. Heck, we can write it all down, that’s how the paper goes cold.

Get multiple notebooks and write it all down. Private keys STAY private. Public keys go PUBLIC. While paper can mean word docs or software programs, we prefer the trees for this!

HOT Wallets are pure stream digital. They are live and accessible, they are software. Exodus, Electrum, and Mycelium come to mind. A benefit here is you can find multiple players to help protect. Think BitGo. Multiple keys are required and in addition to yours, companies can play that third party. But do we really need this? We decide individually.

Just so you know, even the cryptos themselves can offer their own wallets. For example, just check out Energi!

Wallet Hygiene

1. GET SMART – Only buy what you can afford to lose!
2. GET IT OFF the exchange. Exchanges get HACKED, the BLOCKCHAINS don’t.
3. PLAN IT OUT, long-term go COLD WALLET, or even staking! Go HOT WALLET for short-term use!
4. MATCH COIN TO WALLET; BTC to BTC, ETH to ETH.
5. Know your codes, pins, and passwords. This is OUR SECURITY.
6. MULTI-PASS – use Multi-factor authentication, Multi-Signature/Party Wallets for Regular Transactions.
7. NO FAIL-SAFES… crypto is the new, wild West! WE STAND ALONE, and individual; we have the power and the responsibility.

Ok, so maybe this week’s gear isn’t the latest word in tech but you can’t deny that its had a lot of buzz lately, and more importantly, has revolutionized our world in digital wealth and public access to the markets.

Despite how you feel about the WallStreetBets/Reddit/Gamestop controversy, you can’t deny that Robinhood shook up the system, revolutionized things with free trades, and made the system more accessible to the masses. And still does!

After all, as we are among the masses and can only invest small amounts, Robinhood made it workable for us at BCB Cyber and didn’t put us behind from the start like the other companies in the game used to.

The tool, the gear, Robinhood built and still offers for free to the user (yes, they make money but they are a company and have to survive/grow too; their mission was to democratize investing, but guess what, that takes money and if you think otherwise you are fooling yourself), the simple and engaging app, made digital investing accessible. No fees made it realistic for small-timers to get in and not loose from the start.

Built to help the masses gain access to the public markets, and therefore wealth, by digital means is what Robinhood is really about. It’s best we don’t take it for granted. After all, how many on Wall Street are on the side of the little people/low-life masses just like us anyway?

Are there problems, sure. What doesn’t have problems in this world? But, its best to work with it, understand it, and speak with our actions and voices. Be critical sure, but know what you are talking about. We need to use it and be part of the solution! The rumor still is that the company will list soon on the public markets too. We can even be the owners and build the opportunity to direct the company. That’s what people forget, buying shares gives us voting rights! And when the masses buy, they can have power too. Have we not learned this lately?

Don’t believe us, try it out for yourself. What we recommend… Sign up (#OurReferralLink; we can each get free stock and build as a community), don’t put a lot of cash in to start, get your free stock, learn on the app, trade for a while with your free stock (watch those day trading rules though; plus we recommend investing over trading always, however trading for a month or two will give you the full feel), and see what you think. If you don’t like it, little-to-no harm done, close the account and don’t look back. Maybe loose a buck and a little time.

Robinhood doesn’t require a heavy contribution to get started. Yeah they only offer one stock for free, and maybe its usually under $10, but its free and they don’t require a $100 deposit to do it either! Its a low-cost entry accessible to all with a bank account. For BCB Cyber, and we believe the masses, its worth a try.

Remember, we aren’t financial advisors, just the average guy trying to wade through the masses toward a high-tech future and make ends meet. So remember to think for yourself, as the ultimate decision is on each one of us as individuals to build our lives the way we choose for ourselves. In the end, I decided to use Robinhood to get going and I am very thankful I did. I hope you will too!
